Although 87.7 Cleveland’s Sound may be new to the FM dial, they are already having a positive impact in our neighborhood. Rainey Institute recently benefited from a generous instrument donation from the radio station.

Started in 2012 as a community outreach program of 87.7, Cleveland’s Sound, “Notes for Kids” endeavors to share the gift of music while promoting musical education year round.

“Notes for Kids” does this by collecting gently used instruments and redistributing them to deserving children, families and organizations. In the process, they help to create young musicians and inspire them to explore and push their musical boundaries. As the young artists grow and develop, their cultural impact brings a positive benefit to local communities.

The El Sistema@Rainey program is best-known for its intensive music instruction but, if you look closely at what happens in the classroom, you’ll see that it is more than just music.

Each day when students enter Miss Brittany’s class, they discover an inspirational message written neatly on the white-board. These messages mix words of support with gentle reminders about core values such as patience, responsibility and discipline. They convey important information and set the tone for the remainder of the afternoon.

What started as a way to communicate basic information has blossomed into something that the kids genuinely look forward to each day. Giddy with excitement, students eagerly volunteer to read the message aloud to their peers.

The six-week summer camp program at Rainey Institute offers a wonderful alternative to summers spent home alone or in the care of an older sibling.

This year’s camp, THINK IT! BE IT!, runs from 6/17/ – 7/26 from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm with an hour of before/after-care available. Children 5 – 14 are eligible to enroll. Cost is $350 for full 6 weeks.

In our new building, campers take classes in music, dance, capoeira, drama, visual arts, creative writing and sewing. In addition to the arts-based opportunities, we also strive to continually reinforce the fundamentals of reading and math in creatively-based ways that excite kids about learning. Weekly field trips are a highlight that expose our campers to experiences they may not otherwise have. In late July, our program culminates with an end-of-camp festival that enables the students to proudly demonstrate what they learned.
