What is El Sistema?
El Sistema (“the system”) was founded in Venezuela to provide children the opportunity to learn music and to play in orchestras. The program emphasizes community-based orchestra training from a young age, with a focus on making music fun, and inspiring young musicians with a passion for music and for life.
El Sistema programs deliver results: increased focus, self confidence and improved social behavior. Studies also point to music education and its role in improving conflict management skills, peer interaction, self-expression and interpersonal skills.
What is El Sistema?
The program provides daily orchestra classes at Rainey Institute to Cleveland children in grades 2-7. Students may study violin, viola, cello or string bass. The Cleveland Orchestra and its Education Partners, Conn-Selmer and Royalton Music, provide instrument support for El Sistema@Rainey. Rainey musicians have contact with Cleveland’s world-class musical community. Professional music teachers provide daily instruction. Teachers include Rainey staff and musicians with degrees from major music conservatories. Students perform in bi-weekly concerts for friends and family as well as in various community outreach concerts.
Our Core Values
Founded in 2011, El Sistema@Rainey is the result of a collaboration between Rainey Institute and Cleveland Orchestra violinist Isabel Trautwein. The core focus of ES@R is the orchestra as a community, promoting not only musical and instrumental skills, but also respect, responsibility, self-control, patience, perseverance, cooperation, discipline and increased self-esteem. These skills are important for becoming a strong orchestra team member and essential for becoming a self-confident and successful human being. El Sistema@Rainey will serve 60 students in the 2013/2014 school year.
