summer camp was amazing!
You don’t know what you’re missing until you don’t have it… and we really missed our campers!
summer camp 2021 wrap up
There was something really special about the 2021 Rainey Institute Summer Camp! The kids were SO engaged. For 5 weeks, we had over 100 campers participate in paper making, weaving, robotics, creative movement, poetry, music, dance, theater, and visual arts.
“The impact was evident and the confidence the campers showed on stage and the energy created in “Ted’s Place” while showcasing their art, it was truly a summer like never before. A summer that will be remembered forever.” said Executive Director, Dr. Jennifer Harris.
In the final week, our campers showcased all the beautiful art they had worked on throughout the camp. “Ted’s place” was filled with incredible exhibits that included hand made paper, prints and pottery. Some of the children participated in our camp ending talent show that featured memorable performances in poetry, dance, drama, and music supported by our very own Rainey Band! 🙂
It’s hard to believe Summer is over and we’re back to school. Don’t be sad! An exciting new school years has begun… and before we know it, the snow will be gone, the school year will be a memory and and we’ll be getting ready for the 2022 Summer Camp at Rainey. See you next Summer!

Campers will rotate through workshops in every morning. Here is a sampling of the fun they will have.
Professional Dancer, Alice Bannerman, will explore everyday concepts of space, time, energy, and body-awareness through dance. This workshop aims to ignite creative spirit and encourage young dancers to actively engage in the world around them. No prior dance experience required.
Reduce & Reuse: Plastic Upcycling Weaving
Cleveland mixed media artist, Ron Sheldon, will bring awareness to the devastating impact plastic is having on our environment, discuss the importance of reduction and reuse, and participate in a plastic upcycling project that culminates into a massive tapestry that will be displayed at the Summer Camp Exhibit. Start saving your plastic bags now! Any size and any color.
Experimental Paper Laboratory: Paper + Print + Book
Italian born artist, Claudio Orso, will lead a series of paper-making workshops. Through this workshop, campers will explore the process of paper making from the natural sources through the drying process. Young artists will create art on the paper they made and bind them together into a book.
DJ Doc from Refresh Collective will collaborate with campers (6th – 8th grade only) to create hip hop beats, write lyrics, record and perform. Watch your camper grow in their creativity, confidence and character.
Poetry just doesn’t exist in print somewhere waiting to be read! In this workshop campers will weave their words together to create living art. They will learn the power and beauty of words themselves, dynamics of tone, gestures, facial expressions, and more and perform them.
Class details coming soon.
Afternoon mastery classes
Campers will select one program to master this summer.
El Sistema String Ensemble
Come make music with us this summer. Join our El Sistema String Ensemble. No experience necessary – only a desire to play a string instrument. Campers will be grouped by experience and ability in this string ensemble. Come develop technique, musical and artistic literacy, and ensemble playing skills. Campers will display their skills in a final performance in our Debra Ann November Theater.
Musical Theater Dance
Dance the summer away in this Musical Theatre Dance class. Learn dance technique while working on performing with emotion and developing stage presence. Dancers with little to no dance experience will be exposed to multiple dance styles, including Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Hip-Hop, and other styles performed on Broadway and other theatrical venues. Dancers will perform their skills in a final performance in our Debra Ann November Theater. Comfortable clothing is all that’s needed.
Embrace art media in our Global Art session this summer. Campers will engage in magical art experiences through art media including ceramics and paper mask sculpture and explore a wide range of art-making with projects that start at each campers skill level and utilize many tools. Through art creation and collaboration, campers will develop abilities in hand-on art skills while learning about the similarities and differences in people, cultures, arts, and regions around the globe. Campers will display their masterpieces in an exhibit at Rainey Institute
Summer fun happens on stage. Campers will use their imagination, favorite stories and characters to create drama. The class will provide knowledge of acting techniques and stage movement to develop your child’s imagination, creativity and confidence. A final performance will take place on stage in the Debra Ann November Theater at Rainey Institute.
“Whenever you give a young person, a child the opportunity to be free in a way that they can express themselves, they always do better in other parts of their lives.”
