summer camp is back!

We’re excited to announce that we will return to in-person summer camp for 2021.

summer camp 2021

Rainey Institute invites young artists, entering grades 3rd through 8th, to experience our fun and enriching summer art camp, where campers explore art through a new lens and create their own masterpiece. Young artists will spend summer days immersed in a myriad of programs with our teaching faculty guiding them in dance, music, visual arts, and drama…all designed to bring out their creativity and confidence. experiential classes

Creative Movement

Professional Dance, Alice Bannerman, will explore everyday concepts of space, time, energy, and body-awareness through dance. This workshop aims to ignite creative spirit and encourage young dancers to actively engage in the world around them. No prior dance experience required.

Reduce & Reuse: Plastic Upcycling Weaving

Cleveland mixed media artist, Ron Sheldon, will bring awareness to the devastating impact plastic is having on our environment, discuss the importance of reduction and reuse, and participate in a plastic upcycling project that culminates into a massive tapestry that will be displayed at the Summer Camp Exhibit. Fast forward a few months down the road and our young artists will be proud to see their tapestry woven together with other students from around Cleveland to create a mega display in Cleveland. Start saving your plastic bags now! Any size and any color.

Experimental Paper Laboratory: Paper + Print + Book

Italian born artist, Claudio Orso, will lead a series of paper-making workshops, which encompass the environmental impact of recycling, the cellulose science and technology in paper-making, the art of paper-making, print making and bookbinding. Through this workshop, campers will explore the process of paper making from the natural sources through the drying process. Young artists will create art on the paper they made and bind them together into a book.

Fresh Moves

DJ Doc from Refresh Collective will collaborate with campers (6th – 8th grade only) to create hip hop beats, write lyrics, record and perform. Watch your camper grow in their creativity, confidence and character.

Spoken Word

Poetry just doesn’t exist in print somewhere waiting to be read! In this workshop campers will weave their words together to create living art. They will learn the power and beauty of words themselves, dynamics of tone, gestures, facial expressions, and more and perform them.

Art mastery classes

El Sistema String Ensemble

Come make music with us this summer. Join our El Sistema String Ensemble. No experience necessary – only a desire to play a string instrument. Campers will be grouped by experience and ability in this string ensemble. Come develop technique, musical and artistic literacy, and ensemble playing skills. Campers will display their skills in a final performance in our Debra Ann November Theater.

Musical Theater Dance

Dance the summer away in this Musical Theatre Dance class. Learn dance technique while working on performing with emotion and developing stage presence. Dancers with little to no dance experience will be exposed to multiple dance styles, including Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Hip-Hop, and other styles performed on Broadway and other theatrical venues. Dancers will perform their skills in a final performance in our Debra Ann November Theater.

Global Art

Embrace art media in our Global Art session this summer. Campers will engage in magical art experiences through art media including ceramics and paper mask sculpture and explore a wide range of art-making with projects that start at each campers skill level and utilize many tools. Through art creation and collaboration, campers will develop abilities in hand-on art skills while learning about the similarities and differences in people, cultures, arts, and regions around the globe. Campers will display their masterpieces in an exhibit at Rainey Institute

Drama

Summer fun happens on stage. Campers will use their imagination, favorite stories and characters to create drama. The class will provide knowledge of acting techniques and stage movement to develop your child’s imagination, creativity and confidence. A final performance will take place on stage in the Debra Ann November Theater at Rainey Institute.

“Whenever you give a young person, a child the opportunity to be free in a way that they can express themselves, they always do better in other parts of their lives.”
